Moseley Old Hall - August 16 2008

The annual Old Hall Summer Fair at Moseley took place this year on Saturday August 16 and was once again a great event with collectors of Old Hall travelling from all over the country.

Moseley Old Hall was owned by the Wiggin family between 1940 and 1962 before being handed over to the National Trust. Click here for a link to the National Trust website where more details on the property can be found.

Highlights of the day

  • Some Oriana version Campden toast racks were brought along, which are very rare. These have narrower spaces between the ribs and shows they must have served narrow toast on the Oriana! This would certainly not work with the wide-slot toasters of today! The photo shows the characteristic Old Hall – Oriana back stamp. P and O owned the designs so later on had other items from the Oriana range made elsewhere than Old Hall – for instance, an Oriana teapot has been found with a ‘P and O Foreign’ back stamp.

  • Another delight was a lovely example of a Gothic two tier cake stand with thick black glass plates and rails round the plate edges. Rails that clip onto the plates had not been seen before. See picture on the right.

  • To match a 1939 Avon Tea set brought along for display, another tea set was found, as well as an Avon hot water jug. Despite these tea sets not being made for long, it was noted that there were two different spouts on the hot water jugs. One was larger and more ‘beaky’ than the other. The photo below shows how the spouts differ; not much other difference except a little in height. The Harold Stabler inspiration for the design can be seen in the vent hole slits tucked into the lid knobs.
